PAST PERFECT
FUNCTION:
1- It is used when the
speaker is talking about two different events at two different times in the past;
one event ends before the second event happens.
To show the time relationship between the two events, we use the past perfect to say that the first event was completed before the second event occurred.
Structure:
S + HAD + VERB IN PAST PARTICIPLE
CONTRACTION: I / you / she / he / it / we / they + 'd
When before and after are used in a sentence, the time relationship is already
clear so the past perfect is often not necessary.
PAST PERFECT PROGRESSIVE
IT is the tense used for actions that were in progress shortly before or up to a certain point in the past. It emphasizes the process of an action rather than its completion.

CONTRACTION: I / you / she / he / it / we / they + 'd + been
had been + Verb in ing | …’d been working | they’d been working |
had not been ´+ Verb in ing Question: Had + subject + been + Verb in ing...? | …’d not/… hadn’t been working Had you been working...? | I’d not/I hadn’t been working |
