 A vs An  A  is used before a noun that starts with a consonant sound. An  is used before a noun that starts with a vowel sound. FUNCTIONS:  The SIMPLE PRESENT expresses daily habits or usual activities. It expresses general statements of fact. In sum, the simple present is used for events or situations that exist ALWAYS, USUALLY, or HABITUALLY in the past, present, and future. EXAMPLES She goes to class. They get up at 4:00 a.m. every day.  We sleep every night. He picks up his books. Adding  –s/-es  to Verbs Ending in  –y   If a verb ends in  –y  preceded by a consonant, it changes to  –ies  in third person singular ( he, she, it ). SIMPLE PAST   FUNCTION The simple past is used to talk about activities or situations that began and ended in the past.  Take into account the regular and irregular verbs.  Subject + the verb in past tense.  With verb Be  He was sick last week. We were late for the meeting. I was at home yesterday. PRACTICE PAST PROGRESSIVE A n action that was in progress at a specific time in the past. Lucy  was sitting  on the beach at six o’clock yesterday. Two actions that were taking place at the same time. While John  was cooking  dinner, Mary  was cleaning  the house.
